April is Child Abuse Prevention Month!

Blue Ribbon Campaign is Underway

 

Each April, caring communities observe Child Abuse Prevention Month.  A variety of public awareness activities and events take place across the country involving individuals, businesses, churches, organizations and families.  Many agencies offer free resource materials and blue ribbons to the public. 

 

The blue ribbon has been the symbol for child abuse prevention since 1989 when a Virginia grandmother first tied a blue ribbon to her van as a memorial to her three-year-old grandson.  He was murdered by his mother’s abusive boyfriend.  From that point on, the month has remained a time for which we highlight the importance of prevention.  In 2003, South Carolina officials determined that

10,058 children were victims of abuse or neglect.  Sadly, that statistic only represents incidents that were reported and founded.  Believing that one child abused is one too many, the affiliates of Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina work diligently to strengthen families and prevent these tragedies.  Every child deserves a safe and loving environment.  Every child deserves a chance to succeed.
